28 Chinese companies and organizations have been included in the American “black list“.Each of the brands deals with the creation and development of face recognition systems.
The American administration banned 28 entities from cooperating with US suppliers – the rulers also decided to block the purchase of components needed to develop face recognition systems. The official reason is the risks associated with human rights concerns. The Department of Commerce in its document regarding the blocking of specific companies from China mentions that it does not want to use its hand to implement the Chinese campaign of repression and mass arbitrary detention, as well as advanced surveillance technology. The blacklist includes brands such as Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology and Zheijiang Dahua Technology – the two largest companies producing video equipment capable of recognizing faces. Among the “blocked” companies there are also such organizations,
Hikvision said in a statement to Bloomberg that it strongly opposes a new US decision. The company also warned that punishing Hikvision despite joint commitments will discourage global companies from communicating with the US government and will also hurt all business partners.
It is currently unknown whether Chinese brands will be able to find a workaround for the new situation.
