How to Enable and Configure POP3 in Exchange Server 2010

POP3 (Post Office Protocol) is used for retrieving mails on remote server. Clients log on to the Exchange Server and POP3 download email for them for offline use. By default, POP3 services are set to Manual mode. Since Outlook Web Access, Outlook Anywhere, and ActiveSync provides so many features, so nothing is left for enabling POP3 services.

As we know that SMTP is default protocol used by Exchange Server 2010 for sending emails. To enable the POP3, we must first start the POP3 services.

How to Start the POP3 Services

  1. Open the Services console from Start > Administrative Console.
  2. Right-click on Microsoft ExchangePOP3 and then its Properties.
  3. On the General tab, select Automatic under Startup Type.
  4. Click Ok to save the settings.

How to start POP3 service from Cmdlet

POP3 service can also be started from the Cmdlet.

Set-Service -Name MSExchangePop3 -StartupType Automatic -Status Running

How to Configure POP3

  1. Open the Exchange Management Console.
  2. Expand Server Configuration and then select the Client Access.
  3. In the details pane, you will see the list of Client Access server; Select the CAS on which you want to configure POP3.
  4. In the lower portion of the details pane, click POP3 and open its Properties.
