Database Backups are very important for any organization. Any architecture should have a well-defined Database backup strategy in order save an organization during disasters. Natural disasters can happen anytime, Hence we should be prepared for any kind of disasters. If we have backups, we can still recover from the any disaster and run the business at any time after the disaster.
In this post we are going to see how to back up the HANA Databases.
DATABASE BACKUP
Even though SAP HANA database is a IN-Memory database, but it will still have a persistence layer to write the data from memory to disk.
Data is always saved from memory to disk at save points and data changes are written into redo log files. So that in case of failure they can be used for recovery.
TYPES OF BACKUP
DATA BACKUP
- Data in SAP HANA is constantly written into disk from memory at save points. Data backup can be performed with database being online.
LOG BACKUP
- Log backup in SAP HANA is backing up of the log segments and it depends on the log mode in which the SAP HANA is configured in global.ini file.
HOW TO BACKUP THE DATABASE THROUGH COMMANDLINE
- Login to the CLI via user which has privilege to execute hdbsql and run backup or login using <sidadm>.
- Execute ‘hdbsql’
- BACKUP DATA USING FILE ‘<PATH>’
- This will back up the entire database.
HOW TO BACKUP THE DATABASE VIA SAP HANA STUDIO
- Add the system in hana studio.
- Once the system is added, Right click on the system -> Backup and Recovery -> Backup System
- Once you click on Backup system, a dialog box as shown below will open.
- Enter the backup destination and prefix for the backup file.
- Click on ‘Next’. The backup will start..
- You will see the backed up files in /tmp/new directory.
