Hard disk cleaning on PC or laptop
To clean your hard drive you can use the built-in cleaning features of Windows, these functions will clear the Trash and temporary files, but also other files that you no longer need. In Windows 10, simply type Disk Clean-up in the search box next to the Start button .
For Windows 7 Go to Start , All Programs , Accessories , and then choose System Tools , Disk Cleanup . In Windows 8, go to the search box and type Disk Clean-up . Then click Clear Disk Space .
The wizard will identify the files that you think you can delete, as well as tell you how much disk space will be released. Click on ” View files ” if you are not sure what specific files are, or you may know what they are, but you want to keep them, you can uncheck them from the list, so they will not be deleted. So be sure to uncheck the files you are interested in before clicking on ” Clean up system files “.
Eliminates unused programs
Remove all programs that you do not use, Windows has its own tool for this. In Windows 10, look for ” Add or remove programs “.
In Windows 7 go to Start , Control Panel , Programs and choose ” Uninstall a program “.
For Windows 8 in the search box, type ” Uninstall “. You will see an option for ” Uninstall programs to free up Disk Space “.
Then you will see a list of all the programs installed on your PC or laptop. Scroll down the list and select the program you want to uninstall, and then click the Uninstall button at the top of the window. Note that you should only uninstall programs that you do not use.
It often happens that not all unwanted programs can be uninstalled, depending on Windows. To solve this problem you can use Revo Uninstaller . Run the program, and then in the window that opens, click the icon of the program you want to uninstall.
Hard disk defragmentation
The only exception to defragmentation is if your PC has an SSD. Defragmenting an SSD makes no sense because the technology is completely different, so don’t do it!
To defragment your hard drive in Windows 7, click the Start button . Select Programs and then Accessories . Then choose System Tools and then select Disk Defragmenter . Then click Defragment Now .
In Windows 8 and Windows 10, your PC or laptop is defragmented by default every week. So if you haven’t changed any settings, you should not defragment anything. But if you are unsure and you want to check the hard disk status or defragmentation manually, type ” Defragment ” in the search box . One of the results will be ” Defragment and optimize your drives “. Select this option.
You will see a window containing a list of hard drives on your PC or laptop, the type of media, when they were last defragmented and how they are fragmented. You will only have to defragment a unit if it is more than 10% fragmented.
Another thing you should consider is removing unwanted programs from the startup when Windows starts. If you do not know how to do this we have a useful article for you.
