Question |
Brief us about EMC Recoverpoint? |
Answer |
Recover point is appliance based replication solution from EMC. its a storage based replication solution |
Question |
What are the features of EMC Recover point ? |
Answer |
it support one source and 4 target, sync & async replication. it support heterogeneous replication environment, where storage of different vendors are supported. |
Question |
List the features of the EMC Recover point. |
Answer |
wan link optimization. point in time recovery, block to block replication, bi directional replication etc. |
Question |
When using RecoverPoint, does one need to not use storage pools for certain operations? And what does that mean regarding the complexity of implementation? |
Answer |
Storage pool is not dependent on recover point replication configuration/mangement or vice-versa. |
Question |
How can we manage the Recover Point? Via EMC Networker or Recover Point Management console? |
Answer |
Networker is backup tool from EMC and there is no relation with recover point. Recover point is managed by Unisphere GUI & CLI. |
Question |
Can you elaborate the benefits of appliance based replication? |
Answer |
easy to manage, support snapshot point in time recovery, support multiple targets sync and async by user friendly mode. even customer can manage easily two/three way replication. Appliance does not consume host or storage resources. |
Question |
How the Recover Point differs from Networker? |
Answer |
As stated earlier, networker is a backup tool from EMC, it has no relation with Recover point. |
Question |
What are the different kinds of replication and what are their significance? |
Answer |
It can be categorized by various methods like storage based, host based, application based replication avilable with sync and async feature depending of requirement and distance. |
Question |
Do we need a separate appliance for recover point or it is embedded as a license with EMC storage boxes? |
Answer |
Its available in appliance, VRPA and embedded with storage boxes. Appliance comes with Gen-5 intel based servers in cluster. VRPA – can be installed in any virtual machine, provided by customer. Enabler – is available in EMC VNX storage. |
Question |
How different is recover point from SAN Copy? |
Answer |
SAN copy is legacy model of replication, which is having many limitations, point in time recovery is not possible, can not have multiple async target, less intelligent comparatively. recover point is available in appliance, VPRA and storage enabler based. Some common features for the RecoverPoint family are: Multiphating support Virtualization support to Hyper-V, Vmware vCenter monitoring, Vmware SRM Built in bandwitdh reduction Two to eight number of appliances per site |
Question |
What is splitters and how many type of splitters are there in Recover Point? |
Answer |
from 4.0 onwards, only VNX/Clariion, Symmetrix and Vplex based splitter are available. however in prior to 4.0, there are host based and fabric based splitter were available. |
Question |
Is NTP server must in RPA setup? |
Answer |
yes it is must for point in time snapshots. |
Question |
Is there any license for recover point? |
Answer |
yes, license is required for recover point appliance. |
Question |
If one RPA went in reboot regulation, then how to start Replication with remaining RPA in cluster? |
Answer |
RPA cluster is intelligent enough to take care of node failure, if a node fails replication will be fail-over to other node and vice versa. |
Question |
How my writes are replicated to target? |
Answer |
Writes are split by a splitter before committed to storage and replicate. |
Question |
RP licensed on which bases? Is it single time licensed? |
Answer |
Yes its a one time license and capacity based license. |
Question |
How to take console of RPA if it went in reboot regulation/Hung state? |
Answer |
You can connect monitor ate VGA port and check booting logs. |
Question |
How Bookmarks are different from snapshots? When we should use bookmark and when snapshot during DR? |
Answer |
Snapshots are created by system by point in time and bookmarks can be created by administrator before doing any kind of DR (Planned) activity. |
Question |
How can we integrate recover point with clariion , vnx or symmetrix |
Answer |
You need splitter enabler installed in storage and need to create a repository volume to integrate with recover point appliance. |
Question |
Does capacity based lic. depends on number of targets to which data is being replicated? |
Answer |
It does not depend on target or type of data. |
Question |
Can you briefly explain, how data is getting replicated from one box to other. |
Answer |
When data write from host to storage, a splitter send a copy of data to recover point and from there it is being replicated to DR site over FC or IP links depends on distance. same RPA cluster should be available at dr site. |
Question |
Is it mandatory to keep the local and remote RPA of same firmware and model? |
Answer |
Firmware should be the same for all RPAs but model can be the combination of gen-4 and gen-5. |
Question |
How is license factored incase we upgrade the storage capacity? |
Answer |
Storage capacity is not related to Recover point. License for recover point depends on the data capacity, which are replicating to other box. |
Question |
What is vRPA? what are limitations of it compare to normal RPA? |
Answer |
VRPA supports only ISCSI or IP based replciation. distribitued CG cannot be configured in VRPA are some of the limitation of VRPA. |
Question |
How RP connects/communicate for replication between source and target? |
Answer |
It can be communicate over fc or IP from source to target. |
Question |
How does this recover point manage if there is a link failure for say 2 days… |
Answer |
If link is not available for certain period of time, it will keep the changes in journal volume and will replicate once link is available. |
