How to Configure Unified Messaging in Exchange Server 2010
In this Post, we will perform below steps:-
- Create a new UM Dial Plan
- Create a new UM IP Gateway
- Configure UM Mailbox Policies
- Configure UM Auto Attendant
- Associate server with UM Dial Plan
- Use Exchange UM Test Phone to check the UM Settings.
How to Create a New UM Dial Plan
- Open the Exchange Management Console.
- Expand Organization Configuration and click on the Unified Messaging.
- Click on UM Dial Plans tab in the detail pane.
- In the Action pane, click on the New UM Dial Plan.
- Enter any Dial plan name, like Demo Dial plan.
- Configure below options as per your requirements. In our case, we have configured below settings.

- Number of digits in extension numbers 5
- URI type Telephone Extension
- VoIP type Unsecured
- Country code 91
- Click on New to create dial plan.
How to Create a New UM IP Gateways
UM IP Gateway is the IP address of Physical IP Gateway device, which represents the logical link between IP gateway/IP PBX and UM hunt groups. We can specify the FQDN or IP address of IP Gateways.
- Open the Exchange Management Console.
- Expand Organization Configuration and click on the Unified Messaging.
- Click UM IP Gateways tab.
- In the Action pane, click on the New UM IP Gateway option.
- Enter any Gateway name, like Demo IP Gateway.
- Enter the IP address or FQDN of physical IP Gateway/IP PBX.
- Click on Browse to select the Dial plan created above, Demo Dial Plan.
- Click New to create the UM IP Gateway.
- You will notice a new UM Hunt Group is created.
How to Configure UM Mailbox Policies
By default, Exchange Server 2010 create a UM Mailbox Policy. We can open its properties and edit it. In our case, we will edit the following options.
- PIN Policies > Minimum PIN length > 6
- PIN Policies>select the checkbox “Allow common patterns in PIN”, which will allow us to select common pattern numbers like, 12345. If we don’t select this option, then consecutive pattern numbers will not be allowed.
- Click Ok to save the settings.
How to configure UM Auto Attendants
- Open the Exchange Management Console.
- Expand Organization Configuration and click on the Unified Messaging.
- Click on the UM Auto Attendants.
- In the Action pane, click on New UM Auto Attendants option.
- Enter any Auto Attendant name like, demo attendant.
- Click Browse to select the Dial plan, Demo Dial Plan.
- Enter the Pilot Identifier number on which Auto Attendant will be listening, like 60001.
- Select both checkboxes “Create auto attendant as enabled” and “Create auto attendant as speech-enabled”.
- Click on New to create the UM Auto Attendant.
How to Associate Server with Dial Plan
- Open the Exchange Management Console.
- Expand Server Configuration and click on the Unified Messaging.
- Open the Properties of your Exchange Server, Exch01 from the detail pane.
- Click on UM Settings tab.
- Click on Add and select the Demo Dial Plan, created above. Click Ok twice.
How to Test If Unified Messaging is Configured Correctly or not
Now we have configured our UM Server, it’s the time to check if UM server is accepting connection or not. This can be done by downloading Exchange UM Test Phone software from this link.
Once you have downloaded this software, next step is to configure Exchange UM Test Phone setting.
- Open the Exchange UM Test Phone.
- Click on Tool and then Setup.
- Enter the Server Address.
- Enter Pilot Identifier and Caller ID as 60001, configured above.
- Make sure, Call security settings are Unsecured.
- Click on Ok and hit the Dial.
