How To Delete Duplicate Contacts in Android

During the transfer and synchronization of contacts, there are various anomalies that lead to having one contact … 10 times. And exactly the same, exactly the same number. There are certainly many more reasons for this problem, but this is not the entry. Let’s focus on how to remove such duplicates.

Let’s start with the name, because there is a certain inaccuracy here. Duplicate is both a noun and a verb in English. This name is definitely a noun – we don’t want to duplicate these contacts. In my opinion, the name is irrelevant, because you do not know exactly what the application is for and you had to read the description. Not that I judge the application by the cover, but the name itself should be a great shortcut of the application’s operation.

Returning to the merits, just before deleting contacts, let’s back them up. Depending on the Android version, the procedure may differ slightly:

1. We run the “People” application.
2. Menu (hardware button or 3 vertical dots)
3. Import / Export
4. Export to storage
5. OKAY

Now that we are not afraid of losing contacts, we can download the Duplicate Contacts application from the Play store. The application is easy to use. After starting it, a window pops up telling us how many duplicates we have (if we use Privacy Protection, we will have to allow access of the application to contacts).
At the top we have 3 buttons: Delete Selected , Show all and Sort by name . We don’t have to do anything – click Delete Selected . Contacts will start to be deleted. Depending on the number of duplicates, this may take more or less time.

After the process is completed, check that everything went well. If so, you can breathe a sigh of relief. If not, delete all current contacts (you can do this with the downloaded application using the Show all option , selecting Select all / none from the menu and selecting Delete selected again ) and restore the copy of the contacts you made. Proceed in the same way as when exporting except selecting Import from storage .
