According to this source, Apple has asked its suppliers to provide VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) components for use in the ToF sensor. VCSELis a joint laser with surface emission with a vertical resonance cavity. It emits infrared light, which is why the human eye cannot see it.
