Porting
MNP – The agents that offer telecommunications services to users are termed as service providers. The service providers give each user an unique identification number. This unique identification number is called Mobile Station Integrated Services Digital Network (MSISDN). Global System for Mobile Communications phones use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) smart card that contains user account information. The SIM is programmed to store the MSISDN information. The mobile service providers in India have a closed door policy. The service is focused only within their own boundaries. Each service provider in India is a discrete entity and is not networked with one another. We don’t have a separate body which is in agreement with all the service providers to fulfill the common user friendly services like mobile number portability and better security for mobile phones.
The Telecom Regulatory authority of India (TRAI) just ensures that there is fair open competition among the various service providers. The mobile industry needs to look at creating a single root above all of the service providers through which it can define standards that can be used to achieve an open door policy among the service providers.
Benefit of Porting
- Regulatory agencies mandate MNP (Mobile number portability) because it is good for consumers. It eliminates a particular barrier unique to the telecommunication industry, that is, the ownership of the phone number;
- Provide an additional option for consumers;
- Help increase cross platform competition between the fixed and mobile network operators;
- Enable operators to provide innovative solution to meet the market demand.
Porting-Feature and Functionalities
- Porting refers to the ability of end-users to retain their telephone number when they change their network operator/service provider, their location, their service.
- Mobile number portability is a feature that enables the user or subscriber to retain his number across service providers. It means that a person can retain his number while switching his service provider without having to notifying his contacts of the change in his mobile number.
- Thus, under MNP, a subscriber will have the option of retaining the same phone number issued by the old operator even with the new operator.
