Veeam Backup Interview Questions

Veeam Backup Interview Questions

Question
Is there any advantage for veeam over netbackup or networker ?
Answer

Compared to other backup software, veeam has below mentioned benefits 1. Its a agent less software , when we want to take DB or other application related backup , agent is required in other backup softwares. Whereas Veeam does not require any agent to be installed for application backup like Oracle/SharePoint/Exchange etc.
2.If we take snapshot backup via Netbackup or networker, in order to perform GRT level backup, again client plugin should be installed, where as in Veeam without any plugin installation at client level we can take snapshot backup and restore file level and So on.

Question

Is Veeam is only for virtualization?
Answer
yes, Veeam is only for taking virtualization backup of VMware and Hyper-V.

Question
How different is Veeam from Netbackup?

Answer
-> Agent less backup -> No plugin require for GRT backup -> No script required for taking Application related backup And so on..

Question
Can veeam backup VM’s with RDM/Pass through disk as well?

Answer
Yes its possible to take Raw device mapped disk.

Question
Brief about the architecture and advantage of Veeam over the existing backup tools.
Answer

Veeam architecture mainly involves :-
1. Veeam Backup Server
2. Backup Proxy
3. Backup Repository Advantage :- -> Agentless -> Sure backup -> GRT restore without plugin Answered already

Question
Can we take physical server backup through VEEAM.?

Answer

No physical server backup is not supported.
Question
Do we have accelerator options like NBU is this ?
Answer

yes, Its available in Veeam as well.

Question
Can we integrate the Veeam with Tape library , data domain?
Answer
Yes, We can integrate Tape Library and Datadomain.

Question
Basic requirements to install Veeam?

Answer
Below are the Requirement:- -> All types and versions of virtual hardware are supported, including 62TB VMDK. -> CPU: x86-64 processor -> Memory: 4 GB RAM plus 500 MB RAM for each concurrent job. -> Disk Space: 2 GB for product installation. -> 10 GB per 100 VM for guest file system catalog folder (persistent data). -> Network: 1 Gbps LAN for on-site backup and replication, and 1 Mbps WAN for off-site backup and replication recommended. -> All operating systems supported by VMware.

Question
Can you explain about the backup proxy server?
Answer
Backup proxy is a server which fetches the VM data (configuration files and virtual disks) from the production storage, processes the data by applying deduplication and compression, and sends it off to the backup repository (in case of backup) or another backup proxy server (in case of replication). Backup proxy is also used to write the VM data (configuration files and virtual disks) back to the production storage which is used for VM restores, and to create and update replica VMs for replication.

Question
How is Veeam Backup and Replication licensed? Do Veeam has different editions? If yes, features difference between these editions?
Answer

Veeam Backup & Replication is licensed per CPU socket on VM hosts that are being backed up and/or replicated. A license is required for each occupied motherboard socket as reported by the hypervisor API. Note: Target hosts (for replication and migration jobs) do not need to be licensed.

Question
How does the agentless feature in Veeam work?

Answer

Veeam software mainly integrates with Vmware VAPI and Microsoft VSS All the OS and application supported by Vmware and hyper-v are supported by veeam we will be taking image level backup, hence veeam does no require any agent during backup or restoration All the DB instance will be discovered automatically on Veeam admin console

Question
For troubleshooting any issue. what are the logs we can refer?

Answer

Veeam Backup & Replication provides detailed logging of performed activities, initiated jobs, Veeam transport service work and so on. On the Veeam Backup & Replication server, log files are stored in the following folder For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003: %allusersprofile%Application DataVeeamBackup On Linux servers and ESX(i) hosts, logs are stored in the following directory: /var/log/VeeamBackup/

Question
How do we investigate backup failures in Veeam Backup Technology?
Answer

Under GUI, we can see the failed jobs in Job report tab For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003: %allusersprofile%Application DataVeeamBackup On Linux servers and ESX(i) hosts, logs are stored in the following directory: /var/log/VeeamBackup/
Question
Will veam support long distance replication..? If yes Wat is the network bandwidth requirement for long distance replication.?
Answer
yes veeam supports long distance replication ( WAN) Currently Wipro colud computing backup is implemented using Veeam, and the current replication speed is 6 mbps Its all depends on how we configure the backup and you network traffic. Network: 1 Gbps LAN for on-site backup and replication, and 1 Mbps WAN for off-site backup and replication recommended. High latency and reasonably unstable WAN links are supported.

Question

How can we take VMware & Hyper-V backup using Veeam. whether we need to install any module?
Answer
No module is required. Below steps are followed :- ======================== -> Install the Veeam backup software on Physical or Virtual machine which acts as veeam backup server -> Configure Veeam backup proxy server , by providing the Vspher credentails -> Discover and browse the ESX/ESXI vm’s

Question

Can we implement this both Windows and Linux Platform. As well how its working in Vmware and Hyper – V mean Background process..

Answer
Yes, we can implement both platforms. As i mentioned earlier, all the OS supported by VMware/Hyper-V supported by Veeam.

Question

Question
What will be the backup method for VM’s with RDM , as snapshot isnt supported on VM’s with RDM?

Answer
VMs with physical RDMs and independent disks cannot be backed up with Veeam Backup & Replication. In both cases, this is because VM snapshots cannot be applied. Veeam Backup & Replication performs its backup and replication tasks by issuing a VMware snapshot to the VM. Defining how an RDM is set up on a VM is decided during the add hardware wizard if the RDM is larger than the maximum VMDK size of the datastore that hold the VM’s configuration file; performing a snapshot on the VM with an RDM will fail. For VMs to be backed up with Veeam Backup & Replication, the virtual mode of the RDM must be used. VMs with a RDM in physical mode can’t have a snapshot taken against them

Question

If veeam can backup VM’s with RDM’s , which backup method it will use as snapshot isnt supported for VM’s with RDM???

Answer

Physical RDM’s don’t support snapshots, so they are a “no-go” with Veeam. Veeam is a VM level backup product so it depends on VMware snapshots to work.
