Recovering recent chats
If you want to recover deleted messages or chats from the last 7 days, you can use the automatic backup. WhatsApp performs an automatic copy of user data every day.
To restore the latest chats with backup:
- Uninstall WhatsApp .
- Install WhatsaApp again.
- The first time you start the messenger , you will be prompted to restore the backup. Click Restore to agree to restore the message and other data.
Recovery of older chats
For chats older than 7 days, prior configuration of the WhatsApp backup is important. In the WhatsApp settings it should be noted that the backup will be stored in internal memory or on an SD card. If a Google disk copy is also selected, deactivate it.
To restore WhatsApp chats older than 7 days :
- Remove the SD card from your Android device and insert it into the card reader on your laptop or desktop computer.
- Go to the WhatsApp / Databases folder
- There are several files in the Databases folder. These are files that back up your WhatsApp chats. Note that their names contain dates in the year-month-day format.
- Rename the “msgstore.db.crypt” file , including the word “previous”.
- From the other files with different dates, select the one that was created before your messages were accidentally deleted . Rename this file “msgstore.db.crypt”.
- Remove the SD card from the reader and transfer it back to the smartphone.
- Uninstall WhatsApp and reinstall it .
- Confirm backup restore during the first start .
- Finished. Messages from the file you just named “msgstore.db.crypt” will be restored.
Note: By restoring chats as above, you will lose the latest messages that have been sent since the day you selected the backup. To recover the latest news, you can redo the above process by replacing the new msgstore.db.crypt file with the one you named as “previous“.
