Facebook launches image transfer feature – On Thursday (20), Facebook launched a new feature that allows users to upload photos and videos to Google Photos. The tool has been tested in Ireland since December last year, but it is now valid worldwide.
According to Facebook, the decision to allow image portability came from feedback from interlocutors who explained what data should be portable and how they expected the security of these transfers to be guaranteed.

“We learned in our conversations with legislators, regulators, academics, experts and others that real cases and tools will help advance policy discussions. That’s why we’re developing new products that take into account the feedback we’ve received and that will contribute to the advancement of data portability policies, providing people and experts with a tool to evaluate, ”said Steve Satterfield, director of Privacy and Public Policy from Facebook.
According to Satterfield, the intention of the platform is to create practical portability solutions for people to use resources effectively. Even so, the director also pointed out that there will be clear rules on what types of data can be transferred and who will be responsible for protecting these contents as they circulate between different services.
“We kept privacy and security a priority, so all the data transferred is encrypted and, before a transfer is initiated, people are asked to enter their passwords,” explained the director.
In addition, Satterfield commented that the Data Transfer Project (DTP) has open source developed by Facebook, Google , Microsoft and Twitter , and advised other companies to join the initiative to increase portability options for users. “We know that we cannot do this alone, so we encourage other companies to participate in the Data Transfer Project to expand options for people and continue to drive innovation in data portability,” he added.
The director also explained that the tool has only existed since December and that, therefore, it will continue to be improved based on future feedbacks on the resource. One of the improvements will be the expansion of the list of platforms with which it will be possible to exchange data.
