Google Photos puts an end to unlimited uploading; and now ? Know what to do

Google Photos puts an end to unlimited uploading

Google Photos will end the beloved unlimited upload of images and videos in 2021; do i have any alternative? Have

Chaos ensued! The Google Photos will shut down the beloved upload unlimited images and videos in 2021. The Google remembers the cloud picture was launched more than five years, has evolved and is no longer a simple application to store and manage photos. The truth is that the app is already part of our life and living without it is difficult.

Also according to the search giant, Google Photos stores more than four trillion photos and videos and 28 billion new items are sent each week (probably a lot of selfies, bad photos, screenshots of anything and a lot of garbage).

Google Photos puts an end to unlimited uploading

Due to these absurd numbers, Google decided to announce changes soon.

What changes in Google Photos?

First, we need to understand how it is today.

Google Photos in 2020

Google Photos currently offers the following options:

  • Unlimited free storage with high quality option;
  • Free storage with fast quality option;
  • Free storage with original quality option up to 15 GB, shared between Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive ;

To understand:

  • High quality: photos are compressed to save space; if it is larger than 16 MP, it will be scaled to 16 MP. Videos over 1080p will be scaled to 1080p high definition; additional data from closed captions may be lost.
  • Original quality: Photos and videos uploaded in original quality are stored at the same resolution as the capture. It is recommended for photos over 16 MP and videos over 1080p and used for printing giant banners.
  • Fast backup : it ‘s a faster way to upload using Wi-Fi and mobile data. Photos can be compressed to use less data, and if a photo is larger than 3 MP, it will be scaled to 3 MP (good quality in sizes up to 15 x 20 centimeters).

Videos over 480p are scaled to 480p as the standard definition.

Google Photos in 2021

As of June 1, 2021, high-quality, fast-quality content will consume the storage on your Google Account (just as uploads in original quality consume 15 GB). When you reach the limit, you can subscribe to Google One (where needed) to have more storage or delete your extra content and continue with the free storage option.

I will copy here the words of Google itself, so there is no distortion.

  • As of June 1, 2021 , all new videos and photos backed up in high quality will consume the free 15 GB storage made available on your Google Account or any extra storage you have purchased, just like other services on Google already do, like Google Drive and Gmail. [That is, you will only have 15 GB, more than that].

  • This will not affect videos and photos backed up with high quality before June 1, 2021 . They will not consume your account storage. This includes all existing content uploaded with high quality.

Google recognizes the impact of the change and says the decision was made after many considerations. Therefore, users will be notified in advance about the proximity of the limits and will have resources to understand what will happen.

Before that, however, there are things you may already have in mind.

Do I need to do anything now?

Do not.

The announcement has now been made, but you can continue to use Google Photos to back up your photos and videos as usual. After the cut-off date (June 1, 2021), Google will send reminders when you are exceeding the 15 GB free storage limit. For most users, it will still be years before action needs to be taken on this, says Google.

How can I know when I will reach the storage limit?

Yes.

Google has created a personalized estimate for each account that shows when you’ll reach the limit you’ve booked or free of charge. The calculation is approximate and takes into account how often you back up photos, videos and other files.

What can I do when the date arrives?

On June 1, 2021, Google promised to launch a management tool that will help you easily find and delete photos that are dark, out of focus or that you no longer want. You can also buy more storage with Google One, which charges for monthly cloud packages.

What happens if I go over the limit?

After June 1, 2021 – and only after – you will not be able to back up additional photos and videos if you are out of storage space or have exceeded the free 15 GB quota (or additional purchased on Google One).

When you exceed this limit, it means that you are using more storage space than is available for your Google Account. If this is exceeded for 24 months, its content may be affected (that is, deleted).

Are there other photo cloud options besides Google Photos?

Yes!

But, not all are a mom like Google Photos in their limited time.

Google One itself is not expensive nonsense. For the average user, the 100 GB rent does not reach $ 10 per month. However, it is starting to pay for something that has always been free. If you need it, there are plans up to 2 TB with benefits.

All services end up, in some way, charging for “pro” access, with more space and other added features like Flickr, where you can store 1,000 HD photos and / or videos, displayed with ads, for free. The Flickr Pro includes tutorials and online courses photos, two months of Creative Cloud Photography and etc.

In contrast, Apple’s iCloud offers only 5 GB free. The onedrive , of Microsoft , limited to the same 5 GB. Certainly, there are a number of alternatives to Google Photos that are equally limited. The way out is to compare prices and extra benefits of the package.

And Amazon Photos !?

The option of Amazon Photos circulates as an alternative to Google Photos, although only for users of Amazon Prime – from the United States, who pay for Prime in dollars. It arrived after changes to Amazon Drive that had also ceased to be unlimited in the country. Therefore, in Brazil, it is not yet an option on Prime.

Another point to consider is that, as promised by Google, there will be a tool to delete photos and videos of low quality (possibly also duplicates ), a service that is usually paid for in a series of applications available today for iOS and Android . This will certainly give your Google Photos more life.

In short…

Limited Google Photos is still the best alternative to unlimited Google Photos.
