What is Widevine L1 L2 L3 and DRM ?

Widevine L1 L2 L3 and DRM DRM refers to “DIGITAL RIGHT MANAGEMENT”.

This term refers to to all methods that controls access to all digital copyrighted materials.

Now a days most of the contents like Audio, video and text (audio book) are digitally available. So in order to limit their use DRM is applied on them.

ex:-

1.)  some DVD can have three times access (like windows OS cd)

2.) All  online music or video streaming application have downloaded folder encrypted form in them.

What is Widevine then?

Widevine is licencing that is embedded in smartphone in order to access video from popular video streaming apps

like NETFLIX, PRIME VIDEO and HOTSTAR etc.

If your device does not have Widevine licence then you cannot watch videos from these popular apps.

you can check whether your device support widevine using DRM info app from playstore or appstore.

Widevine has three category:

  • L1  -> It means you can watch maximum quality upto 4k (whatever max resolution device supports) .
  • L2-> It means you can watch only 720p videos only.
  • L3-> It means you can watch only 580p videos only.

if non of them then you cannot watch videos from these apps.

By default L3 is applied on every device.
