iPhone warranty - are you still eligible for support?

When you purchase an iPhone, you get a one-year limited warranty that will allow you to fix any manufacturing defects and hardware errors in the repair process for free. With the paid AppleCare you can extend this period additionally to two years. Whether you have the standard package or AppleCare, Apple makes it very easy for you to check the warranty status of your iPhone.

Details of the standard iPhone warranty

The standard iPhone warranty that comes with all new phones includes:

  • one year repair and service coverage
  • 90 days free phone support

However, the iPhone warranty does NOT cover any of the following issues:

  • battery
  • Blemish like scratches or dings
  • Water damage or similar
  • Damage caused by using other products, such as a case
  • User-made changes, eg jailbreaking
  • Repairs from vendors that have not been authorized by Apple
  • theft

The extended AppleCare warranty

Apple offers an extended warranty program called AppleCare. An Apple customer can extend the standard warranty of a device by purchasing an AppleCare protection plan during or within 60 days of purchase. This extends the standard warranty and extends the support for hardware repairs to two full years.

With AppleCare, you can have two claims repaired. But with every repair comes a fee of 29 $ for screen repairs and 99 $ for all other repairs. But usually this fee is cheaper than most repairs without additional coverage.

Although it may make sense to buy AppleCare, you can also return the service package – but will not get back the full purchase price. Instead, you’ll receive a pro-rated refund based on how long you’ve been using the plan.
