Reasons why we won't see Windows 11 (at least for now)

Windows 11 –Since the earliest versions of Windows, when the operating system was merely an application for MS-DOS, Microsoft’s model of updates has been to release new paid versions every few years. This has allowed the company to grow very fast and shape the operating system into what we now know as Windows 10 . However, since the launch of this latest operating system things have changed, and that is that the company now has a different development in mind, a development that we know as Windows as a Service .

While Windows has always been a product that was sold to users and companies as is, with its corresponding support, as-a-service business models have gained great popularity in recent years since they represent a large number of advantages for both users and companies that develop the service.

Microsoft normally released new versions of the operating system every 3 years. For example, Windows 7 was released in 2009 and Windows 8.1 in 2012. However, since the arrival of Windows 10 (in 2015, another 3 years apart) things have changed, and that is that right now it is the latest version of the system. operational, and it will also continue to be for a long time to come.

Windows 10 will continue to evolve, there is no plan to launch Windows 11

The version we have right now of Windows 10 (May 2019 Update) is not similar to the one we saw in 2015, not even the version 1709 that was already beginning to shape the operating system. Every year Microsoft releases two major updates to its operating system, one in the spring and one in the fall, updates that come with a host of changes, enhancements, updates, and fixes to actively evolve the operating system.

A couple of months ago Windows 10 May 2019 Update came to us , which until now is the last update of the operating system, and also the company is already working on Windows 10 19H2, the update that will arrive after this summer, and Windows 10 20H1 , the first spring update next year.

All of these updates continue to change the operating system, including new improvements and features, as well as providing users with greater security. And all thanks to the Windows as a Service model.

Therefore, although you might expect to see Windows 11 soon , this is not even in Microsoft’s plans. It might even be that we never get to see him.

The advantages of the Windows as a Service model for users and for Microsoft

In Microsoft’s own blog we can see an article where one of the developers of the operating system demonstrates how the operating system has evolved, how with each update it has received new improvements and features and how it is possible that we will not see Windows 11 in the short term according to the company’s plans.

The advantages of the Windows as a Service model for users and for Microsoft

With the end of support for Windows 7 just around the corner, in less than 6 months, the company is focusing its efforts to attract as many users as possible to Windows 10. And this is only possible thanks to the development model that it is following now, called Windows as a Service and which, in a way, is similar to the Rolling Release model seen on some Linux distros.

This model of updates allows Microsoft to improve the stability of the operating system with quality updates and more than 16 million drivers, to be a safe operating system and protect users from constant threats , improve user productivity with new features. and tools designed for this purpose and also reduce development costs. This is how Microsoft can offer all updates completely free of charge.

For these reasons, Microsoft does not yet have Windows 11 in mind. The Windows 10 development model is on the right track, and will continue to be so for now. So we will continue to receive security patches every month, as well as cumulative updates, and every 6 months we will see great updates, such as 19H2 or the expected 20H1.

Windows 11 could be a reality in the future, although many more years will still have to pass.
