First of all, it is important to note that the use of Steam Link presumes some prerequisites. You must have a user account on Steam and the PC games in question must have been purchased or enabled through the store. In theory, all games available in the Steam library are compatible with the mobile streaming feature.

Finally, you need to know that:

  • – The Steam app must be installed on the computer (transmitter).
  • – Both the smartphone that will run the games and the transmitting PC must be connected to the same network.

Step 1. Access the Google Play Store and download and install the Steam Link app . It is completely free.

Step 2. After installing the application, open the service. Touch the “Start Now” option.

Step 3. Choose one of the following options:

  • – Pair a Steam controller;
  • – Pair a Bluetooth control;
  • – Use the cell phone’s touch screen as a control.

Step 4. Next, Steam Link will search for computers that are on the same network and that are running Steam. Locate your machine in the list and tap on it.

Step 5. A code will be generated and you must enter it on the computer. This step acts as a kind of authentication, authorizing the two devices to transact information.

Step 6. Once the connection between the devices is authorized, Steam Link will perform a network test to find out if your connection is stable and fast enough to perform this feature.

For best performance, Valve recommends the following:

  • That the PC is connected to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router via an Ethernet cable;
  • That the Android smartphone is connected to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router;
  • That the Android smartphone is close to the router (less than 5 meters).

Step 7. If everything went well, the “Start playing” option will appear on the screen. Just browse the library, choose the game you want and you’re done.

Feature is not new, but usage is growing

The Steam Link feature has been available since 2015, but its use was not very common at that time. This is because most Australian users did not have access to routers compatible with the 5 GHz band and the speed of broadband connections was not sufficient. Today, five years later, things have changed.

Both the average speed of networks has grown and the processing capacity of cell phones has increased. Even models with hardware considered intermediate are capable of running Steam Link without any major problems. Therefore, the number of people who use the smartphone as a secondary screen to enjoy the main PC games has increased.
